Does a well and pump company need a license?
Many states license well drillers, and some also license pump installers. Texas requires a state license to drill a water well and to install a well pump. Oregon requires well constructors to be licensed and bonded and tells homeowners to check both. Ask for the license number and look it up with your state water or environmental agency.

Good to know
- Test well water at least once a year for coliform bacteria, nitrates, total dissolved solids and pH, and check the well each spring (CDC).
- Well pumps typically last 10 to 15 years with good care (HomeGuide).
- More than 43 million people, about 15% of the U.S., use private wells, which federal drinking water law doesn't cover (USGS).
Questions to ask a well and pump company before you hire
Ask these on the phone or at the estimate. A good pro answers every one without dodging.
- Are you licensed (and bonded, if required) for well and pump work here?
- What tests did you do? Did you check the pressure switch, tank and wiring?
- What brand and size of pump, and what's the warranty on parts and labor?
- Will you disinfect the well after the work? Should I retest the water?
- How long will we be without water?
Red flags to watch for
Warning signs from consumer protection agencies and trade groups.
- They aren't licensed or bonded where your state requires it. Source
- Door-to-door water treatment sales with confusing financing. The FTC won $43.6 million from one lender. Source
- They base a sales pitch on their own "free" water test instead of a certified lab. Source
- They quote a new pump without checking cheaper parts like the pressure switch. Source
If you get scammed, report it to your state attorney general's consumer protection office and at reportfraud.ftc.gov.
